SUMMARY:La bohème
DESCRIPTION:Royal Theatre of Victoria\, BC \nOne of the most loved operas of all time\, Puccini’s La bohème is a gorgeous\, nostalgic slice of life about a group of young friends hanging out together\, experiencing Paris and love\, and loss. Puccini’s music sparkles with humour\, pours out lush\, sumptuous melodies\, and is always completely irresistible. \nIn the role of Mimi\, we are thrilled to welcome back Lucia Cesaroni\, last seen at POV as Woglinde in Das Rheingold and Anne Trulove in The Rake’s Progress. Tenor Jason Slayden (Adorno in 2016’s Simon Boccanegra) is Rodolfo. That ever-loving\, ever-squabbling couple\, Musetta and Marcello\, will be played by Sharleen Joynt (the Queen of the Night in last season’s The Magic Flute) and Brett Polegato (Paolo in Simon Boccanegra).

SUMMARY:Il Trovatore
DESCRIPTION:Puget Sound Concert Opera at San Juan Benefit Players \nTwenty-five years before the actual story begins\, the father of Count di Luna had had a gypsy woman burned at the stake as a witch; the gypsy’s daughter\, Azucena\, in reprisal\, kidnapped one of the two sons of the old count and is believed to have killed him. The other son\, the younger Count di Luna\, is now commander of the Spanish army. He has never lost hope that his long-lost brother may still be living. The Count and Manrico of Biscay are enemies in a civil war and rivals for the love of the Duchess Leonora. \nUltimately\, Manrico & Azucena are both imprisoned by the Count. Leonora wins their freedom by offering herself to the Count in exchange. When the Count accepts\, Leonora takes a deadly poison and goes to tell Manrico that he is free. Before Manrico can leave\, di Luna arrives and sees that Leonora is dying\, he orders Manrico beheaded. When Manrico is dead\, Azucena declares that her mother has been avenged and tells di Luna that he has just killed his own brother.

SUMMARY:Carmen
DESCRIPTION:Tacoma Opera at Pantages Theater \nby Georges Bizet \nCarmen is an opera in four acts by French composer Georges Bizet. The libretto was written by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy\, based on a novella of the same title by Prosper Mérimée. The opera was first performed at the Opéra-Comique in Paris on 3 March 1875\, where its breaking of conventions shocked and scandalized its first audiences. Carmen has since become one of the most popular and frequently performed operas in the classical canon. The opera is written in the genre of opéra comique with musical numbers separated by dialogue. It is set in southern Spain and tells the story of the downfall of Don José\, a naïve soldier who is seduced by the wiles of the fiery gypsy Carmen. José abandons his childhood sweetheart and deserts from his military duties\, yet loses Carmen’s love to the glamorous toreador Escamillo\, after which José kills her in a jealous rage. The depictions of proletarian life\, immorality\, and lawlessness\, and the tragic death of the main character on stage\, broke new ground in French opera and were highly controversial. \n(253) 627-7789

SUMMARY:L'Elisir d'Amore
DESCRIPTION:Vancouver Opera at Queen Elizabeth Theatre\, Vancouver\, BC \nL’Elisir d’Amore (The Elixir of Love) is a two-act romantic comedy in which a poor and hapless young man eventually wins the hand of the rich and educated town beauty. The love potion of the title unlocks the secret desires of all the main characters\, and along the way the plot takes many amusing twists and turns. Chinese soprano Ying Fang\, a first-rate coloratura soprano\, makes her role debut as Adina. All of the other roles are sung by an exceptional all Canadian cast. Tenor Andrew Haji is note-perfect as Adina’s lovesick stalker\, Nemorino\, and shines with a perfect lyric tenor tone in the famous aria “Una furtiva lagrima”. Baritone Brett Plegato is pomposity and cockiness incarnate as Belcore\, Nemorino’srival for Adina’s affections. Dr. Dulcamara\, the salesman behind the fake magic elixir\, is sung in suitably wacky style by baritone Stephen Hegedus. Set in a small Canadian town just before WWI\, the sets and costumes are whimsical and set the stage perfectly for this tale of innocence. Music Director Jonathan Darlington has total command of Donizetti’s richly textured score. \nThe performance will last approximately 2 hours and 25 minutes\, including 1 intermission. \nSung in Italian with English and Chinese Surtitles \nL’elisir d’amore is a Canadian Opera Company production.

SUMMARY:Il Trovatore
DESCRIPTION:Puget Sound Concert Opera at Gethsemane Lutheran Church \nTwenty-five years before the actual story begins\, the father of Count di Luna had had a gypsy woman burned at the stake as a witch; the gypsy’s daughter\, Azucena\, in reprisal\, kidnapped one of the two sons of the old count and is believed to have killed him.

SUMMARY:Così fan tutte
DESCRIPTION:Seattle Opera at McCaw Hall \nBy Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart \nLet the games begin! Love has many faces when two buddies don disguises to test the faithfulness of their fiancées. Will the women fall for their “new” suitors as the opera’s title (“All women do it”) suggests? And if they do\, who is really to blame? Blending bawdy humor and keen insight\, the charming Così features some of the sweetest and most ravishing music Mozart ever wrote. \nJonathan Miller’s acclaimed contemporary production “may be the funniest and most dramatically successful show Seattle Opera has ever staged.” –The Seattle Times \n(206) 389-7676
